Doctors have been playing the most vital role in any living being’s life. Be it the birth or the declaration of death, a doctor is someone whom we really lay an eye upon or even look into the place of deities we believe in. Remembering the tragic incident that took a toll on everyone’s life which was the ‘Corona Virus’ also had doctors to fight as warriors for us.
‘Doctor’s Day’ is celebrated in many different countries with various different stories and on various different dates according to their beliefs. In India here, we celebrate it on July 1 in memory of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. He was a physician and also the second chief minister of West Bengal. His birth was on July 1, 1882, and also died on the same day in 1862.
Now, let’s know about some doctors from India who contributed a lot to the field of medicine:
1. First Doctor of India:
The first Indian female who went on to be a doctor of Western medicine is Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi. She was the first woman who went on study and graduated from the United States with a degree of two years in Western medicine.
2. World’s First Surgeon:
Sushruta is considered to be the father of surgery. He is said to be the listed author of a treatise named ‘Sushruta Samhita’, a treatise that is considered to be one of the most important treatises surviving from the ancient history of medicines. Also, it has been considered for being the foundational text for Ayurveda.
3. First Human Dissection:
Pandit Madhusudan Gupta, a Bengali Baidya and a practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine was trained in Western Medicine. He is said to be India’s first human who performed dissection in Calcutta Medical College(CMC) in 1836.
4. Legend After Whom Doctor’s Day is celebrated in India:
Bidhan Chandra Roy was the first to establish Indian Medical Association in 1928. He was a close friend and also a doctor of Mahatma Gandhi and had an immense contribution towards the opening of the Indian Institute of Medical Health. He also was behind the opening of Kolkata’s first postgraduate medical college. For all of their contributions to the field of medicine, ‘Doctor’s Day’ is celebrated in memory of this legend on his birth and death anniversary of him, both being on the same day, 1st July. He was even a Bharat Ratna Awardee.
First MBBS Doctor:
Kadambini Ganguly was the first woman doctor in India who practiced with a degree in modern medicine. She was the first woman who practiced medicine in India and also the first female to get admission into the Calcutta Medical College in 1884, after which she was subsequently trained in Scotland. She also went on to be the first speaker in the Indian National Congress.
Many such renowned doctors have made history in the ancient as well as modern medical field with a huge amount of contribution to the people of the nation. We should always be thankful to the ones who held us back from our drowning health and sometimes are the reason for our new lives.
